A Blessing to Prepare for the Whirlwind
Check your policy
there is no insurance
for the whirlwind
it comes
best prepare.
Find a wise one
with heavy faith
you’ll need double
ultimately.
When the waters part
follow, listen,
for the whirlwind
it comes.
Likely it will
come for your wise one.
keep watching
pick up their mantle
but lament and
question the whereabouts
of God, theirs and yours,
the LORD,
before you part
your own waters.
You might be the wise one now
check your wake
for the whirlwind
it comes.
The Spirit has littered your way
with love
with joy
with peace
with patience
with kindness
with generosity
with faithfulness
with gentleness
with self-control
and yes with fleshy things
but leave them there
for the whirlwind
it comes
and others have followed you
through the waters you parted
on the way to the Holy One.
dig no hole
build no nest
make no bed
but full of faith
journey
for the whirlwind
it comes.
Though no divine footprints
show the path
you know the way
the truth
the life
because the LORD your God
has gone before
and before
and before
and there the voice speaks
calls
for the whirlwind
it comes
with upheaval and twisting and change
May the Lord Immanuel bless you
in the midst of it all
for the whirlwind it comes.

  1. Just so you know, out students helped lead service two Sundays ago, and three high school students read sections of “A Blessing to Prepare for the Whirlwind” and it was so good. They read dynamically and everyone leaned forward to take it in. Thank you, Alex.

    1. I am so glad it connected for your students and your congregants. I am always trying to make sure these things can be heard intergenerationally.
